I wouldn't say I'm really having much luck with the 'hardy' Gardenias... I planted 7-8 different hardy selections in 2014. After last winter without special protection Crown Jewel and Grif's Select recovered best. So far this winter the Crown Jewel is the only one that looks OK (after relocating it to not receive any direct winter sun). I'm not at all convinced that the leaves of any of the cultivars are capable of surviving more than one quick dip below 10F uncovered.
I really like my Aucubas, especially my 'picturata', in the three winters I've had it (in it's sheltered location out of the sun and wind), it has never received any damage.
With the bamboo, I was surprised not to see any damage after last winter when we got down to -2 or -3 F (-19C). The picture shows a mix of P. aureosulcata 'Spectabilis" and P. atrovaginata
