So far, I'm moderately optimistic about the R. macabeanum's cold hardiness. Even with the rose cone, it surely saw temps below 0F. I hope it decides to up-size its leaves some day...
With the E. neglecta, I'm reasonably confident that I will be able to save some of the lower portions of the stems so it won't have to recover from ground level. Depending on how things go with it, I would like to establish a solid short trunk, which is easy to protect. Then I could let it do whatever it wanted to do above that each growing season and then dieback to the trunk in harsh winters.
The Y. recurvifolia x rostrata looks like a winner so far... with any luck, it will start to develop a short trunk this coming growing season.
