Re: Final damage report
It seems the bottom 3/4ths of the shurb now is dying. it was a nice 5ft shrub, and was protected with mulch, cage with burlap. It was totally fine until last month, when I noticed the top growth was struggling to break dormany (the bottom branches were flushing and the top was just very slow). Now this week the struggling new growth at top just turned black and died, and I'm noticing the mature leaves on top dying as well. everything above 8 inches is dying, while below new shoots are emerging. Maybe that's cold damage on the trunk? or some fungus/bug that's compromising sap flow? Regardless, I think I lost most of it, but I will leave it alone and see how the shrub responds this growing season.
Daphyniphillums are hardy here... I suspect something else has killed the top. I donno.
