Posted by Jeff A z7a NJ on 8/15/2016, 1:06 pm And by local palms I really just mean the palms Steve has planted publicly and my own..that arent mine anymore..sadly enough but more on that later. Starting with Steve's palms.. I havent checked in on these completely exposed Needle palms that I believe Steve planted between 10-15 years ago in a long time. After I was devastated (extra I know) by the horrific winter of 14-15 I kinda became less enthused about palms in general as ALL the trachies that had been thriving in the area (up here and in Cape May) had completely bit the dust. But now a little older and wiser I have a new perspective which is why i was very much pleased when i went to check on the Needle palms that Steve planted with absolutely no wall, wind break, or micro climate to speak of. These needles are planted in the middle of a field exposed to wind, snow, sleet, freezing rain, everything a z7a can throw at them and even survived 14-15 where i am assuming they saw anywhere from -2f to -1f and abnormal durations of cold. Now last year was admittedly 100 times better registering a solid z7b last winter so that def helped but these palms are looking immaculate so even after taking quite the beating two winters ago I am hopeful that maybe at some point in the next 20 years needle palms may actually become something represented at least down in our 7b areas. From there I traveled down the street to the community center where Steve has planted a bunch of minors. Now these do benefit from a wall location so may get up to a half zone in assistance but nonetheless are still impressively doing very well. And lastly as promised a bit more clarification on my previous statement about my palms that are no longer "my palms". I moved out of my dads house in Feb to an apartment..a good thing of course but I left my palms behind..well he also moved and the company that now owns the house came in and did their thing..well unfortunately doing their thing meant removing these strange plants that we dont recognize...well after 11 years of growth with no protection heres what 10 mins of shearing can do.. But what they didnt anticipate was how much these bad boys would respond to this very hot summer we've been having..as the bounce back begins.. Minor Needle and as they are today after 2 months of summer So even though not technically dead yet..i fear their time is limited..so please remember him at his former glory..coming out of the 14-15 winter from hell..unfazed Thanks for looking 696 Message Thread Local Palms update - Jeff A z7a NJ 8/15/2016, 1:06 pm Re: Local Palms update - Tim MA z6 8/16/2016, 7:25 pm Re: Local Palms update - Stevenj7a 11/10/2016, 11:33 pm Jeff you should have dug them up - Clint, Niagara Falls, ON 8/16/2016, 7:29 am Re: Jeff you should have dug them up - Jeff A z7a NJ 8/16/2016, 10:13 am Re: Jeff you should have dug them up - daniel 8/18/2016, 12:46 pm Re: Jeff you should have dug them up - nucci60 z6ma 8/24/2016, 1:42 pm Re: Jeff you should have dug them up - Jeff A z7a NJ 8/18/2016, 7:01 pm Re: Jeff you should have dug them up - daniel 8/19/2016, 2:20 pm « Back to index
