ARE YOU AN IMMIGRANT OVER THE AGE OF 18 THAT HAS ATTAINED A PhD OR MASTER’S DEGREE?
ARE YOU WORKING AS A CAB DRIVER?
IF SO, THEN I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
My name is Elena Kariam and I am a social work student at Ryerson University currently working on my Masters Degree. Part of my degree requirements is to complete a research study. For this study, I have chosen to focus my research on immigrants and their experiences in the Canadian labour market. I am recruiting participants who possess PhD and Masters degrees to discuss their role as a cab driver, and if this occupation has impacted their sense of self, identity, and relationships with others. If this is of interest to you and you think you are eligible to participate, please contact me for more information.
WHY PARTICIPATE?
Your contributions to this knowledge may provide a better understanding of the challenges immigrants experience when moving to Canada, but also your personal stories may shed light specifically on the barriers and difficulties experienced by immigrants when trying to work in their desired fields.
WHAT WOULD PARTICIPATION INVOLVE?
For this research I will be recruiting up to four (4) participants to interview for 1.5 – 2 hours individually. You would meet with me for an in-person interview at a public location that provides aural privacy, which could be a public library or a private room on the Ryerson University campus. The information you provide will remain confidential. Questions asked in the interview may include:
Do you think educational background shapes a person’s identity? If so, how would you describe your identity right now?
Have you experienced change in any of your relationships since you moved to Canada and began working in a different field?
What is your impression about how your friends and family members see your life, having obtained such high levels of education, yet up to now, unable to obtain employment in your field of study?
Your participation in this research would include a copy of this research in the form of a formal document and a $10 gift certificate to Tim Hortons.
This study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through the Ryerson Research Ethics Board.
If you have any questions regarding our research or about participating in an interview, please contact:
