I can't speak to that as we live in differant climates. Cut it or snap it leaving an inch or so. It does happen naturally here during our rainy(monsoon) season. I thibk water in the winter in your clime could be a problem(thawing/freezing). In either case, gluaca is a very hardy species.

I think that stump where the stalk is, is dead and new growth is where the green leaves are.
