In my experience the purchased top cuts looked to be cut with a sharp brush axe but would guess that a hand saw or chain saw would work. I use a brush axe to make my top cuts on aloifolia for instance. The cut is laid in the shade for a week or two then planted vertically with a post hole digger. On the eastern tree types the parent tree sans top then branches to provide multiple top cutting opportunities in a year or two. Also I make my cuts during the active growing season as you will just get a stump for a long time if winter cut. You might want to consult someone with western yucca experience before cutting on anything that is valuable. |
