We recently made the trip to and from Newark and will again to pick up visitors next winter. No way is that an easy trip and to be avoided as much as possible. Not only is the distance prohibitive but construction on the route has been long term..so much of a hassle that we willing paid a car service to return our guests to the airport to avoid it.
Kennedy's distance is within reason mileage wise but the route dovetails with a commuter's route to the city. The route already entails traffic jams in the area normally. I would guess that if LGA's terminal is torn down, they would have to shut down or diminish service until a new building was in place and planes would divert to the closest airport, Kennedy. Access and entry work would impact the Grand Central Highway traffic. If the plans were to only refurbish the terminal, it could be done in stages..closing down part of it while part remains open. Safety, necessary traveler conveniences as well are concerns, pretty surroundings and shops. not so much so.
