“So how bad is it exactly?”
A few moments go past that are instant to you, yet seem like a lifetime to him.
“If it’s not going to stop bleeding, you’re going to need help. Tear up a shirt, wrap it round the wound as tightly as you can.”
He looks up to the sky, his face instantly soaked.
“No, I don’t think you’re stupid. Millions of people walking this planet go through bad patches in their lives. What you’ve done tonight is purely an explosion of what you’ve been holding in for so long.”
Again he’s pacing backwards and forwards, wearing in a path in the concrete below his feet.
No, no you don’t. I’m telling you, you do not want to do that. Listen to me, keep focused on my voice coming through your telephone and nothing else. It’s pretty late, do you have anybody that can come to your place right now?”
Stu-E’s hand clenches in to a fist, he brings it up to his forehead and presses against it, trying to release some tension without alerting whoever is on the other end of the line.
“That’s good, your Sister is on the way? I’ll stay on the line until she’s there. Don’t worry about it, all you need is a friend and a willing ear, it’s bloody pissing it down here but I’ll live. Just stay with me on the phone and we’ll get all this fixed for you.... She’s there now? Good, I’ll leave you in her hands. You don’t need to apologise, remember what I said; you’re not the only one to do this, you’re not alone. Ok... Get some rest, good night.”
He disconnects the call, puts the phone back in to his pocket and just stares down at the floor for a few moments, even though the rain just isn’t letting up. A long sigh escapes his lungs before he turns around towards the door, as he does though he notices the camera crew he’d arranged to meet at this bar in the middle of nowhere.
“How long were you guys there for?”
The reply is inaudible as the view blurs to inside the bar, at a table as Stu-E’s just drying himself off with a bar towel.
“You just caught me saving a friends life there, she’d cut her wrist and was about to do the next one until I called her. This time of the year is hard for a lot of people around the World. When people are at rock bottom, I just wish they’d realise that there’s millions of people out there just like them dealing with their own shit.
I probably shouldn’t, but I think maybe it’s better to leave that damn phone call in the promo, maybe it’ll save someone out there. The hardest part of being in that position is when you can’t see any other way out. But if someone out there feels like that they can watch this and know that yes, there are people out there who will listen, who will support them then maybe we can save a life.”
He finishes drying off his hair, tosses the towel to an empty chair and styles his hair with his hands.
“But what makes me the expert, huh? Here’s a little information about me, because it might seem like I’m on top of the World but I’ve been just like those people during my darkest days. I have an 8 year old daughter that I’ve not seen for five years, on November 3rd I was a pall bearer at my Grandfather’s funeral and then on November 20th my best friend’s fiancé’s Mother was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer so I flew half way around the World to be at the pushed forward wedding.
My whole family is falling apart at the loss of my Grandfather, especially with the run up to Christmas coming up and I’m not there to help them. I can’t make it home for Christmas this year because I’ve got far too many work commitments, I’m missing my Father’s 60th Birthday in January for those same commitments and to top it all off I’m pretty sure a close family member is becoming addicted to amphetamines.
If ever there was a candidate to just go bat shit insane, I think I’d have a damn good chance of filling that spot! But I won’t. We as human beings are truly amazing creatures, we will repair, we will move on and we will deal with it. Someone once said that once you have nothing left, you got nothing to lose and when you got nothing to lose you find unknown quantities of drive and determination.
That’s life, it’s not all peaches and cream.”
Casually he shrugs his shoulders and relaxes in his chair, taking in the bar room surrounding him before taking a drink from his Newcastle Brown Ale. Stu-E thinks for a few moments about what to say, takes another drink and winks at the camera, as if he is ready for his promo.
“So this time we’re hitting Bulgaria, can’t say I’ve ever wrestled here before. What I can say is that these fans are in for one hell of a match between myself and Butch Parker. Like him, I’m surprised that we’ve been placed in the squared circle so soon on my HWA journey but I’m more than looking forward to it.
As he mentioned he’s got a World title match just around the corner, imagine the waves of momentum in my favour if I somehow come out with a result against him? I could choke him out, knock him out or just sneak a three second pin; he’s that respected by the fans and myself that either one will do wonders for my career.”
He laughs as he finishes his sentence.
“Talking about my career, I hope in my match with Butch Parker we have a referee that knows what he’s doing. The last few shows I’ve noticed a few things that haven’t been right, sad to say but I’ve seen better refereeing in footballs Premier League! If I have to, maybe I’ll have to re-educate some of them in my own little Priceless way.
But moving back on to Butch, it’s going to be a hell of a lot fun having England going up against Scotland in that ring for the HWA faithful. Though I’ve always been tagged as ‘England’s Favourite Wrestler’, I’ve actually always been of the thought that England and Scotland belong together in the United Kingdom.
Before I signed up to this promotion I spent a hell of a lot of time in Scotland, up in Glencoe training on the mountains that fill that wonderful glen. The people I encountered were brilliant, and I think Butch and myself will do them proud, regardless of whatever Michael James’ intentions are because well, he’s going to have enough to deal with, in Heckler & Kosh... I’ll make sure of that.
So Butch, thank you for your kind words mate, but I’m going to be more than just a warm up for your World title shot.”
Stu-E takes another drink of beer, opting to end the promo on the ‘done a million times before’ cliché of finishing his beer as the promo fades out.
