I don’t remember any bad gifts but your game did start me thinking about gifts I received, who gave them, and how long I used some of them. One wonderful gift was a complete set of luggage that I used for years. No...that was not from a relative or a generous family friend, but from the Lutheran Church in Forest. They had a brand new building and a brand new electronic Allen organ. Sweet. I had been their organist my jr/sr years. Every Sunday morning I played for their worship service which was an hour or so earlier than the Methodist worship service that I also played for every Sunday. The luggage set was beautiful. Solid white. Maybe not the most practical color but it lasted a very, very long time. I loved it.
The other gift that comes to mind was a hairdryer. Now you have to put your mindset back into the hairstyles of the 60’s. Huge hair curlers all over the head. No flimsy little fan hairdryer could handle that. So this monstrosity was BIG. It was portable but had a huge motor that produced enough air to blow up a small parachute to cover your head and all those curlers that resembled short pieces of pvc pipe. Mine was a pink bouffant contraption. I, and many of my college girlfriends used it for years. Hairstyles changed. But I kept my portable bouffant hairdryer. By the way, it neatly closed in on itself to be almost as compact as all three pieces of my beautiful white luggage combined. Many years went by with that thing taking up valuable space in the tiny closets that Kel and I had in our first apartments. I remember the last time I used it. Don’t know why but I wanted to “set” my hair one Saturday afternoon. The girls were toddlers. I got all set up, pulled that pink bouffant bonnet on my head, and lo and behold that big motor roared on and scared my babies to death! They thought mama had exploded. They cried their hearts out and that’s the last time I used it. But it was a fine graduation gift and I remember the sweet family that gave it to me.
