Steve, we are looking forward to seeing you, too, this coming Jul 16! I’ll never forget that first time seeing you again after 50 years! It happened in 2011 after the spontaneous planning of the original Nabs n Coke Party. Remember? We threw that party together in two weeks hoping to get Alex Craig Graham and John Townsend there before their illness took them. The idea of a Nabs and Coke Party was born when Alex started reminiscing on the phone with some of us and later on this site about the memories of Cold Cocolers and Nabs on hot summer days growing up in Forest. We could walk all over town in those days and a Coke and pack of Nabs purchased at the drug stores or gas stations was soooo good. He wanted one more visit home. One day, I simply decided we were going to try to make it happen. I called Kats Kave ( seriously wanted to have this gathering in Forest) but it was booked for the Sat we needed. Only other option was Roosevelt Park. I didn’t know if we would have 10 people or 200. When I called the Park there was only one pavilion left. I asked if it was near a bathroom. She said “yes” and I said “I’ll take it.” Turns out we had close to 100 Bearcats show up that very first time. Steve, if I remember correctly, you and Scooter (maybe David G?) offered to arrange a small plane with a pilot friend to fly Alex from Memphis. (One day I’ll tell you what Alex told me about that…..but it’s a bit too colorful to post here lolol!) Moving on…I can think of so many of you that jumped right in bringing fans, a boom box to play Anchors Aweigh (Larry!) but most of all….Bearcats came bringing NABS AND COKES on one of the hottest days of the year! Just like the old days. Sadly, neither Alex nor John were well enough to make it that day. But I will tell you that it made Alex very happy that he had inspired the first Nabs and Coke Party. Who knew that we would want to repeat that event every year for a decade! But that’s what we did. (Minus COVID interruptions)
