Obituary

Shirley Nell Smith passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2020, at Ochsner Health Center O'Neal in Baton Rouge, LA. She was 80.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents William Asa Jones and Ruby Audie Brantley Jones; her husband, Glen Smith; daughters, Tena Matthews and Taye Taylor; brothers, Gary Jones and Eddie Jones and her sisters, Sue Smith and Jonette Gaddis.
She is survived by her daughter Tamie McCaffrey (Alton); brother, Ronny Jones (Mary); step-sons, Larry Smith (Vicki) and David Smith (Dana); step-daughter, Tammy Smith; grandchildren, Chad Holmes, Lee McCaffrey, Brian McCaffrey, Will Matthews and Lindsay Lynn; step-grandchildren, Audrey Smith, Daniel Smith, Ashford Kehoe, Cole Hawthorne, Laney Smith, Taylor Smith, Peyton Rutherford and Parker Rutherford; great-grandchildren, Colby Smith, Chloe Smith and Corbin Brown.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Glenwood Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Tew and Rev. Stephen Burks officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of the service. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Chad Holmes, Brian McCaffrey, Lee McCaffrey, Will Matthews, Corban Tew and Colby Smith.

Please correct me if that class year is inaccurate.

Condolences to friends and families. In case you didn’t know, this is Mike Gould’s aunt and Ronnie Jones’ sister. I’m sure there are other relations who are in still in our Bearcat Family. Please help name them if you know. Thx.

Kaye, the class date...'57, is correct. She played guard on the same team as Malba Eady, Carla Lowery, etc. She was a tenacious defensive gal. Her older brother Eddy was a fine running back for the Bearcats around '52 or '53 I think. Sue, her older sis, was a Lady Bearcat on one of those many fantastic teams a few years prior to '57. They had an 82 game winning streak in the '53-'54-'55 seasons. The Jones lived directly across from Liberty Bapt. Church on old 80 hwy. (north of the current Hwy. 80) out east of Forest approx. 4 miles.

Thanks for posting David, I married Shirley’s little brother, Ronny. I read your post to him and he said thanks. Yes, those Jones kids were quite athletic! I moved to Forest my freshman year 1967 and love hearing all the stories about the Jones bunch. There’s been several generations to go to FHS and excel.. Thanks for sharing! Would love to hear more!

David, thank you so much for that information. My sister, Glinda, tries to keep me straight on the basketball part. But since there were several good Bearcat families sharing the same names, I’m never quite sure. However, I really am grateful when I can place them with those same families who continue to be loyal Bearcats today.

I'm so sorry to hear about Shirley. A lot of good childhood memories going to church at Liberty Baptist, right across the road from the Jones place. In fact, I was baptized in the Jones' pond. Those were the good old days. Condolences to Shirley's family.

Pansy, just read this to Ronny! He remembered you! Thanks for posting! I moved to Forest my freshman year 1967 and love hearing all these stories about the Jones family and FHS!
Sounds like they made some lasting memories at FHS! Would love to hear more!
