I always did the same, and was happy for the drop-in. It's just the way I was raised. But when I tried to do it out here in Calfornia, I got raked over the coals. And by my own cousin, and one of my good friends. I guess it's just not a mannerly thing to do, excuuuuuuuse me. You better bet your boots I never did it again. If I just happen to be in the neighborhood, like I was with my cousin and my good friend, they ain't gonna see me.
Now my cousin is a pill who I haven't seen in 25 years. Finally decided to break off the relationship after putting up with her toxic nonsense for too many years. A real kvetch. Selfish as the day is long. She invited me for lunch years and years ago, told me to be there at 11 because she fed her kids early. I told her I couldn't be there til 11:30. She said, OK, come, but you'll have to serve yourself as she and her kids were going to eat at 11. Stupid me. I should have told her thanks, but no thanks, but I was a little nebbish compared to her, she was 9 years older than me, I was always told to look up to her, and I let her get away with insulting behavior for the first 25 years until she became so outlandish that I finally called it quits.
My girlfriend was unhappy that I knocked on her door unannounced because she didn't have her makeup on. Dear Lord, wasn't that terrible? After she moved away, we didn't see each other much and as time went on, we didn't see each other at all. One day, years later, I met her at the gas station, she was driving a little old car. She didn't say hello how are you, The first thing she said when she saw me was "This isn't my car. It's a loaner. My Cadillac is in the shop." Like I gave two hoots about what she was driving.
Suffice to say I'm one big bad so and so today. Never again will I put up with people who pretend they're A-OK because they call before they come.
