I think the bigger issue here is that Gutekunst and/or the scouts/people advising Gutekunst on who to select simply aren't good at evaluating big guys. Gute has now had 9 drafts. You can count on one hand the number of "big guys" (DL, Edge, OL) who Gute has drafted in all those years who turned out to be any good. On DL/Edge, the one or two who might have been either lacked the interest/effort (Gary) or haven't been able to stay healthy (Wyatt). On OL, beyond Elgton Jenkins, name another OL Gute has drafted who hasn't made us all wish for the position to be upgraded.
And to make matters worse, although the vast majority of his free agent signings have worked out very well, the absolute worst of the bunch just happens to be the guy they were depending on for left guard this year. $77 mil, and I read he's at the second highest cap space of the year, and he misses more games than he plays.
But I will also make one other comment: When they had Stenavich coaching the OL, it wasn't this bad. Ever since Stenavich got promoted to OC, and they brought in Luke Butkus as OL coach, the OL has trended worse every season. Food for thought...
