This has got me thinking again that while jumping over 300 feet has been shown to be possible, is it really worth the risk?
I'd rather see someone perform one of the amazing stunts like Robbie Maddison's recently been doing than killing themselves for a new distance record.
Certainly Maddision's latest stunts have involved a lot of danger, but they seem to offer a bigger "WOW" factor, without as much injury/death potential as jumping 400+ feet.
Just my two cents .

: Jason Bird, a local extreme-sports athlete,
: suffered severe injuries after a
: violent accident over the weekend near Taft.

: It's true, Bird went down hard. The rumors
: that he had compound fractures weren't true.
: He did break a previously broken right tibia
: and fibula, and he also suffered extensive
: damage to his facial bones, from his
: mandible all the way to his frontal bone.
:
: Right now he's receiving oxygen through
: tubes, plus he's got a tracheostomy to make
: sure he continues to get air. He is unable
: to speak at this time. His mandible (jaw) is
: apparently broken in two places on the left
: side, one place in the front and one place
: on the right. His maxillary bone (above the
: mouth and on both sides of the nose) is also
: broken, and so are his zygomatic bones
: (cheekbones). His frontal bone (forehead) is
: broken on the tops of both orbits (eye
: sockets). This is major damage.
:
: What a horrible crash. It's always tragic
: when a rider of such talent goes down as
: he's pushing the envelope, surpassing all
: distances in the history of man. He's one of
: three riders in history to jump in the 400
: foot range. He's the first to crash at that
: kind of distance, and this shows that 400
: feet is no joke. It's amazing that he's
: alive. It will take him a year to heal up
: very well at all. Let's all keep him in our
: prayers!
:
: Sonya said he jumped as far as 440 feet
: before that crash. Right now she's tearing
: down his ramp and packing everything up. She
: could use our prayers too.

: part was hif face is busted up with a lot of
: bones crushed, he might look a little
: different, the family had to bring photos
: for the surgens so they can have an idea of
: how to rebuild it.
