The trunk is not just bend it's rotting, I would say there is no choice but to cut it if you can find some living tissue. You are able to root them but in my opinion in the north east with all the water we have it will do very poorly at best. Don't dig the root up since it may very well re-sprout but it's many years to get back to 8'. good luck
