The hybrids with filamentosa tend to create offshoots and the main stem dies to the ground. Some forms will grow a trunk but the trunk is short lived and will die after the next bloom. Maybe someday we will have a hybrid which trunks tall and is zone 5 or even 4 Hardy. That will be cool
