I'm not sure I can explain this exactly right and where it's easily understood. Every single thing you click on on the net comes to you in "packets" or bits/bytes. These are measurable by your ISP. These add up to MBs, then GBs, then TBs if you have an unlimited service. I forget what those after TBs are called. Unlimited service means you can download all the TBs you want each billed period of a month. You can stream movies etc. My service (and others now) only allow 20 GB a month for $99 - if we go over they bill us for the extra bytes. The sky is the limit. If we want to stream we can watch all the videos and movies we want, but we would pay dearly to do it. Some people have had bills of as much as $600 because they didn't understand what UL and DL data meant and what limited DLs/ULs mean. These people learn quickly to stop the videos and movies and online game playing.
Each time you post here you are UPLOADING bytes/data (packets). Each time I click on your posts I am DOWNLOADING bytes/data packets. These are very small DLs.
General Internet use such as boards and forums and getting email all add up, but to nothing like the data downloading movies/videos. Movies can be several GBs and when you only get 20 GBs a month those movies can wipe out your monthly GB allotment in no time. Way before the month is over.
But because so many people use streaming even many of those offering unlimited service either FAP you by slowing down the bytes being transferred or no longer offer the service. The internet isn't like radio waves. It's all bits, packets moving up and down. People will drop their ISP when they move or start traveling to find out they can no longer find an unlimited ISP. Those with the UL services were grandfathered in. But again, if they can afford to pay the sky-high price of going over the limit then they can do their movies and whatever.
I hope you understand better what those of us, and there are millions of us, have to deal with now where ISPs are concerned and what bytes/packets are.
When you read this, understand I used UL bytes to send it and you used DL bytes for it to appear on your PC to read.
