You're going by L.I. which is a tiny overbuilt, densely populated section of this county.
These low wage jobs may never have been intended for people to live on, but that was THEN and this is NOW. Different times. Different people. Society changes. Businesses change. Where are the unskilled to find jobs paying living wages? If the majority of those unskilled workers somehow managed to get and education - where would they work with so many more experienced people unable to find good jobs?
I hope I'm making myself clear.
So we either raise their pay and encourage them to move up somehow, or taxpayers subsidize their slave wages so they can survive.
