There wasn't the kind of illegal immigration we are facing now. There was a lot of objection to legal immigration, too, but the population was smaller, and the country was still being built. There was more room in all ways for them. Plus, I don't think there was the burden of tax-payer-funded social services or the feeling of being responsible for their welfare once in the country. Whatever there was fell to private sources, or the church/religious community. And from what I know, they were dedicated to becoming Americans. They did not wish to deconstruct the new surroundings into, nor keep the language of, the way of life they had escaped. It has been a Hispanic/Latino problem in general for a long time now, not solely a Mexican one. I can well imagine that Mexico might build a wall to stem the tide of Central Americans, although if they move through quickly on their way here, it's not the same kind of problem as ours. Mexico is not the soft, bleeding heart country that we are, in comparison civil rights are a joke. Nor is it a color-blind, caste-less society as some people think. They will do what they feel they need to do without compunction.
