Congratulations to the FHS Band

The Forest High School Band was one of 12 class 3A schools selected to participate in the State Class 3A Marching Championships. They placed 6th overall. This was an upward movement from their placement of about 4 levels. They missed 5th place by .4 of a point. This year's champion was Columbia which is one of the largest schools in 3A. Last year's champion, Booneville, finished second this time around. This is really quite a step forward for the Bearcat Marching Band. Congratulations to Mr. Davis, Mr. Bishop, and the members of the band. Keep up the good work.

How does a band get “selected” in the first place?

The State Evaluations (contest) are done at 5 different sites around the state. Those bands with the highest total scores in each classification are then invited to participate in the Marching Championships for their class. A band may choose to go to the competition or not go. I assume that that place would be offered to a band with the next highest total scores. Not only does the band receive a rating like we use to but they also receive a numerical score at these state championships. That's how I knew that Forest was .4 less than the band that placed 5th. Does this make sense?

Yep. Your explanation is excellent, but make sense?? I guess so. Does not seem quite as exciting as the good old days, though.

You are very correct, Kaye. There was no feeling like sitting in those stands at Miss. Memorial Stadium and later at Hinds Community College and hearing the announcer say, "Now, for the results of the day." When they first discontinued doing the marching in the spring, they would post the results of the concert and sight-reading scores on a bulletin board in the lobby of the auditorium. Now they don't even do that anymore. You have to have connections to find out what everyone made. At least I still know the people to ask!

Larry...this probably happens to you too...but occasionally through FB or some other media outlet...I will run up on someone from those days who will say such as...”oh I remember you! You were in the FHS Band during the all superior run...Hal Polk was a friend of MY band director, and he used to tell us to pray that we didn’t compete same day as Forest!”
Also...we learned so much from that intense competition. Life lessons.
