I really can see where you're coming from re: the steady stream of high defensive player investment. OTOH, part of the problem is that too many of those high-draft-pick defensive players either didn't pan out at all, or they are now old enough that injuries/age are taking their toll and they just 'ain't what they used to be', and some who were drafted when Barry was DC simply don't fit with this current system. But for as many high defensive draft picks there have been, they still have some pretty big need in every defensive position group except for S. So unfortunately, even more high defensive picks are probably in order.
That said, you're right about weapons. There was a period in the late Favre - early Rodgers time frame (say from 2006 - 2012) when their WR group was the envy of the league. But other than that, well, before those years Favre often had very little help at WR (Schroeder, Bradford, a rookie 7th round pick, and the ghost of Antonio Freeman at one point... heck, even the 1996 Super Bowl win depended on resurrecting the career of an out-of-football Andre Rison), and after 2012, Rodgers always had 1 real go-to (Nelson, then Adams came on about the time Nelson declined), but often not much behind him (OMG - Jeff Janis, Brett Swain, Jared Abra-cant-spellit, the list goes on and on). Have to wonder if one more WR in 2014 = not crashing and burning vs. Seattle? They were SOOO close... So I totally agree with the sentiment of not repeating that same mistake with the current QB. Plus, with Jordan as young as he still is, bring in a young, top WR now, and they'll have time to develop the kind of chemistry that Rodgers had with Nelson and Adams.
Oddly, this is one season I think they could take any of about 6 different positions and my reaction would be "Yeah, makes sense"...
