they grow wild(New Mexico) in what you would probabnly consider pure sand. That being said, they like good drainage, sun and heat(which will be challenging in Chicago, but probably doable for this yucca). If you have enough root, cut the top off, replant and wait. They do regenerate if there is enough root mass. The root is almost like a tuber. Also very easily started from seed, at least here.
