Re: Why some don't want kids....
I had a lovely apartment in a two-family house in Woodside in the early '80's. I had the little house I'm living in now rented..to be used as a vacation or retirement home if I lost the tenants who were living in it when I bought it. Although I had been getting increases on the apartment every two years, it was still much cheaper than the going rates. Without traffic, it was 10 minutes to Manhattan and even cab fare from there affordable if needed. I probably would never have given it up if the landlord hadn't wanted to raise my rent $500 in one month. I agreed to a $25/mo increase each mo. until I reached his amount so I could absorb it and got busy looking for a house because the rent would be mortgage sized. I found one for 158K and lived there for 12 years. The housing market was poor but rising when I sold it for not much more than I bought it. 5 Years later, it sold for $600K. Checked today's estimate, about $550.
