I have so many memories of Mr P., but this is probably my fondest. My first band contest as drum major my sophomore year. Competition is over and we all sit nervously together in the stands. Finally, the announcer goes down the school roles alphabetically with scores. Hushed silence when he gets to Forest High School: Concert, 1; Sight-reading, 1; Marching, 1. Then the band and fans erupt with joy and clapping. However, there are 3 categories to go: drum major, inspection, and student conduct (is that one right?). Of course, no one can hear those! But then I notice Mr. P walking BACK from where he'd moved in order to hear ALL ratings, looking straight at me with a smile and holding up a "1" for my eyes. I still cry when thinking about it. The best.
