1. He was set to, at minimum, split time with Rhyan at RG - in fact, those first few games he WAS splitting time (similar to the situation with Walker and Nijman). And this after missing at least some of the offseason/training camp with injuries (I think it was the same shoulder that ended his season). That doesn't happen for a rookie unless there's some talent there. It was pretty obvious to me that they were ready to plug him in as the starter, as a rookie, over an incumbent (Rhyan) who had played at least 'decent' football the year before. That doesn't happen (a rookie coming right in and winning a starting job week 1) unless a guy is showing something pretty special in camp.
2. Yes, it's also based on 'potential' (which itself is based on his college performance)
But there's another reason why I think he'll get every chance to oust Walker, and it's not even about Morgan's own performance per se: Walker is in a contract year. Unless something drastically changes in his performance, I think we can make a pretty good guess about what kind of contract he (Walker) will get. And I don't think Gutekunst will want to pay that level of a contract for a decent, but not much better, player like Walker. Like has happened with OL in the past (Runyan comes to mind). Resigning Rhyan, otoh, I believe would be comparatively cheap (guard vs. LT, and based on his performance I don't think he'd get the level of contract Walker might). So I think that if Morgan shows ANYTHING that says he can even just be as good as Walker, I think Walker goes and Morgan is plugged in there. In a way, I guess you'd say I'm hoping Morgan is the guy, because I really hope they don't pay the at-best-average Walker the kind of salary cap number that I'm sure he'll get.
