A little late for advice now but I would not have given joint access to any monies that were yours alone. That's not to say that you shouldn't have kicked in for large joint expenditures that wouldn't be covered by your income and that you agree were necessary. I'm just aware of too many instances where one spouse thought they had a nest egg to find out the other had chipped away at it until it was no longer available. Don't discount your ability to handle bill paying. You may not be able to balance a checkbook on your own but I don't think your problem extends to writing a check or knowing if you've got the correct change when you go to the store and buy something.
