The better the camera and lens, the more opportunities open up but a good SLR, lenses and equipment are more expensive than the average person is willing to spend, not to mention how heavy the load is to carry. Cameras are improving by leaps and bounds, becoming obsolete quickly in view of what's new. Once lenses are purchased which can cost as much as the body or more, you are often caught in sticking to one manufacturer, Nikon and Canon the leading contenders.
Knowing your equipment well does not make a good photographer. Opportunities, Imagination and Creativity are just as important in creating an interesting image. An image straight from the camera these days is seldom as outstanding as they once were. So...you need to develop skills in postwork as well. Photoshop is the number one editor but its no longer available as something you can buy except perhaps used or an older version..it's sort of rented to you in an online service. It's affordable but if you want to stop using it, you have nothing.
The Canon SX60HS is my current bridge camera, although I do have a Nikon SLR as well. I find for most things, the Canon does a good job and I love the zoom ability. It's lighter to carry around and the only drawback as compared to the SLR is that it isn't as fast for action shots. I have been working with digital graphics since the 80's and consider myself pretty proficient.
When I find something new, software or technique, I make it my business to learn about it. In short, I spend a lot of time.
Here is today's project:
