NO! When the lens extends..it is not zooming, it's just coming out of its protective covering. The little lever on top of the shutter button (where you snap the pictures is your zoom. Moving it will increase the zoom and moving it in the opposite direction will bring it back to where it opened. You should be able to see the effects in the view finder.
Removing your card should not be difficult..just tap on top of it and it should pop up to grab. Using a card reader (do you have one in your computer?) Much easier than attaching cables.
The battery drains because it's keeping track of dates and time even when it's off. If you pull the batteries when you're not using it, they will not drain but you'd have to reset the date and time each time you wanted to use it.
If you use rechargeable batteries, you won't have to keep buying new ones, they last a long time.
The difference in the main controls is only that in the image I used first has the programming in the same button, yours (the one with auto shown) uses a separate button which is really better.
Also is a list of how the Auto button shows you what its setting for by icon..this should appear in the viewfinder or LCD screen.
