Re: Life in Forest in the Early 70's
My Dad was tight with money and always looked for ways to cut overhead in cheap labor .... I was a recipient for many years of that position. But one thing that he did often was take a teenager that had horses training in our stables and allowed them to live with us in the summer. They got room and board and more riding time with their mount in exchange for helping around the barn and at horse shows. Made many friends along the way. One customer was from Lafayette, Louisiana and had a friend's son stay with us one summer. His name was Bill and he was a little older than me and grew up in the Bayou wetlands of southern Louisiana. One day, Bill and I were fishing in a boat on the farm pond and Bill got the bright idea to go swimming in the pond. Well that pond was full of water moccasins but Bill assured me that if they try to bite you while they're in the water, they'll drown. Well, silly me believed Bill because he was older and from the Bayou so in we jumped. All of a sudden snakes started falling out of the trees and hitting the water as they swam out to greet us. As we were desperately trying to climb back in the boat, a little 8' aluminum job, we turned the boat over. All of our belongings including wallets, shoes and shirts sank quickly to the bottom. We wound up pushing the boat to the shore kicking our legs vigorously trying to keep the snakes away. We made it and I swore then, "Never take the word of anybody as gospel until they prove themselves otherwise".
