School Life after Forest in the 70's
I was a Bearcat for a whole one and a half years. Beginning my sophmore year in high school, we learned that we'd be moving during Christmas vacation. Dad had taken a position as farm manager in Chattanooga, Tennessee but he let us stay in Forest through the first semester while he went to Chattanooga to begin work and house hunt until we joined him. When I found out what school I'd be attending, I told Mr. Harvel the band director. Mr Harvel said that Tyner High School in Chattanooga was one of the best bands in the nation and I'd enjoy it. Well, Tyner was terrible! Not only was the band mediocre but the school itself was not to my liking. I only went the 2nd half of my sophmore year. Chattanooga is the 4th largest city in Tennessee and this was a very large school with no personality to it. The only thing I can really remember was ... coming back from a band concert we did somewhere, I was riding with 2 other band members in the front seat of their car, our instruments in the backseat. For some reason, the driver saw his girlfriend driving in front of us and decided to pass her going up a hill. Not a good idea as another car crested the hill and hit us head-on. We weren't wearing seatbelts (the 70's remember), so I braced myself for impact and managed to walk away unscathed. The other 2 guys had minor injuries. If I had to name just one person that I remember from Tyner High School, I couldn't do it. So I finished my sophmore year and decided to try a new school for my junior year (story continues) ......
