I only got to participate in one field day and that was as a Freshman because we moved before the spring of my sophmore year.
There were different events such as 3 legged race, egg toss, balloon popping, etc. But there was one event that I got talked into entering that would surely have today's politically correct crowd up in arms. That was the Tobacco Spitting Contest. Well my buddy Micah Hendry talked me into it so I stepped to the line for the honor of my freshman class and gave it my best shot .... or spit. The competition was stiff as some of the best tobacco chewers that normally moonlighted hauling hay, were ready and chomping at the bit, so to speak.
I dug out a pack of Levi Garrett tobacco and began chewing vigorously to get my mouth as moist as I possibly could. My first attempt was about 7 foot which wasn't going to put me in the medal round but my second attempt was close to 12 feet (might have had something to do with my friend Micah helping to measure the distance). Then the senior and the sophmore took their 2 turns but came up short ... I was in the lead. Then the Junior representative toed the line, looked at me with a sneer and spit about 17 feet. Didn't even need a second spit but hey, I came in 2nd place and got a few points for my freshmen class!
