Driver's Education was taught by Mr Carr. During one class, three of us accompanied Mr Carr as he tested our reflexes in a simulated front tire blow-out out at the airport. Mr Carr had a triggering device where he sat in the passenger side. He would without warning trigger the device which left a paint mark on the road simulating the blow-out. As soon as we touched the brake pedal, it would activate another device to mark the road with paint of our reaction time. Then we would measure the distance between paint marks and also the distance it took for us to come to a complete stop.
I was up first and my reaction time was pretty good but I brought the car to a controlled slow stop ... which wasn't the object of the exercise. We needed to slow the car down faster than a controlled stop.
Next up Was Rocky Jones. Rocky also had good reaction time to hit the brakes and a very good time to bring the car to a halt. In fact, almost too good. If the two of us in the back hadn't been wearing safety belts we would have been sitting up front with Mr Carr and Rocky in their laps.
Drivers Ed was a lot of fun and Mr. Carr made it interesting also.
