The Beautiful Dog River
I believe its called Futch's Creek nowadays but I only remember it as Dog River. The fields of Whiteway Farm on the side towards town went right up to Dog River. I had a Honda Trail 90 at the time and wasn't allowed to ride on the road but I needed gas. Just across the river was the Texaco station and a motel .... if I remember it was called El's Motel. Anyway I drove my Honda to the edge of the property, crossed the creek with an empty milk jug and walked the short distance to the gas station. When I had finished getting gas and walking back, I noticed that my kickstand had sank into some mud and my Honda had fallen over on its side and was getting a little wet. Well I was only about 100 pounds then and that motorcycle was alot heavier and I couldn't stand it back up. My parents were out of town and nobody was close by. As I struggled, a nice gentleman passing on the road saw my predicament and stopped to help me right the motorcycle back up. I thanked him, filled the tank and tried to start my bike. I kicked the kick-starter until my legs were numb and couldn't get it to turn the engine over. So I left the bike there and walked back to the barn. The next day, Dad got home and asked where my Honda was, I pointed down in the field towards Dog River. Now if you remember, back in the early 70's Evel Knievel was going strong with all of his motorcycle jumping shows. For some reason, my Dad thought I had tried to "jump" Dog River with the Honda like Evel Knievel and had submerged my bike. I never got him to believe the actual truth that it just fell over with no help from me but he still laughed and told that story to friends of me jumping Dog River until the day he died. HONEST, IT FELL OVER!
