Re: School Life after Forest in the 70's
After finishing 10th grade at Tyner, I decided to start my 11th grade year at Ooltewah High School. Ooltewah is a small town just north of Chattanooga. They had a brand new high school that had never been used. Since the farm Dad managed was in Ooltewah, I was able to use the farm address as my residence so I could attend. Ooltewah was a small school like Forest and by the end of my junior year, I pretty much knew everybody. One individual that became my best friend was Mark Whittenberg. Mark's dad owned horses so we hit it off fairly well. Through Mark and being in the band, I met many new friends. A couple of highlights from my time at Ooltewah .... We went on a band trip to Washington DC and also visited Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, the Gettysburg battlefield, and Freedom Square in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I was 2nd chair trombone and 1st chair couldn't make the trip so I inherited his solos and duets as we did numbers from the Broadway Musical, "Irene". We even played on the steps of the US Capitol building for our representatives from Tennessee at the time. Shortly after our trip to DC, our Biology class took a trip to Key West, Florida. We rode school buses all the way down through Florida in stifling May heat but enjoyed camping out in tents for a week on one of the Keys and dissecting Marine life that we caught ... even a baby shark. A great trip that was memorable. Another instance that I remember was our English class doing a play. My friend Mark had the lead part and I was an extra with a speaking part. I can't remember the name of the play but it was about a simpleton type cowboy from the Old West that went up against a desperado. One scene at the end called for the desperado to be shot and croaked a few last words. Dad had an old Colt Navy revolver that looked like a 6- shooter and I brought it to school to use in the play. Can you imagine the pandemonium that would cause now-a-days? My main speaking part was to utter the phrase "I say, Let's Hang Him!" The guy next to me was supposed to say a line afterwards but he forgot his line. Attempting to prompt him, I repeated my line .... still no response from my fellow actor. So I shrugged, and said, "I still say, Let's Hang Him"!. By that time, the audience was in full accord and shouted "Hang Him, Hang Him, Hang Him!" Got through the play anyway, packed up my pistol that was used for a prop and went home. I was going to enjoy my senior year and graduating at Ooltewah High School! But fate had other plans ....
