A Tribute to my good friends - The Hendry Brothers
I've mentioned that 2 of my best friends from my time in Forest are brothers Micah and James Hendry. Micah and James both graduated from Forest ... Micah in 1977 and James in 1978. Their sister Anna in 1980. Both brothers played the tackle position on the Bearcat football team. Micah number #72 and James number #76. Both brothers grew up playing baseball in Little league, were Scouts with the Boy Scouts, and were successful in high school and presented with honors for achievements. Though they both moved from Forest, they settled in neighboring towns in southern Mississippi close to Laurel. Micah has been in the poultry business since graduating college and James in the pharmaceutical sales field. Recently,(last week) we were planning a get-together down in Laurel after a 48 year absence. Unfortunately, I developed car trouble on my way and was stuck in Cullman, Alabama for 3 days in a motel with no transportation. So our reunion is on hold temporarily until we can all get free again. But our times as adolescents in Forest were some of the most enjoyable in my life. We traveled around Scott county on our 10-speeds, played ping-pong until the rooster was ready to crow, listened to Jethro Tull on our 8-tracks, and dipped smokeless tobacco (I think they managed to kick the habit whereas I haven't yet). As we got a little older we parked the 10-speeds as motorcycles now had our attention. Micah and James' dad was in the local Shriners and the organization had purchased Honda 350's to ride in parades ... Not to be "out-done", I had a Kawasaki 250 2-stroke/3 cylinder that could hang with them pretty well. When Micah and I turned 15 and got our drivers license (thanks to our drivers education under Mr. Hugh Carr) we graduated to automobiles. The brothers with a yellow 1968 Mercury Cougar and me with a white 1965 Ford Mustang. I still drive Mustangs and am on my 6th one now. We managed to install 8-track players in our vehicles so we could cruise the roads and listen to our Jethro Tull music while keeping an empty soda bottle handy to spit our Skoal in. We weren't extremely rebellious or rowdy but we definitely had some great, memorable times. A tribute to my friends and the good times .... where did the years go?
